Green Glaze or Yellow Glaze Southern France Antique Pottery Water Jugs Pitchers - several sizes

These items in similar sizes and shapes will be returning to the site in June, when the shipment arrives in Seattle from my April sourcing trip in Provence.

Each one of these incredible pieces are hand thrown and no two are the same. Made in St. Quinten-la-Poterie, Anduze (Provence) and the Pays Basque and Occitanie for centuries, with the design dating back to Greek and Mediterranean influences in the south of France, they are used to keep liquids cool, slightly buried in the earth.

This specific piece is a gargoulette and was used by the shepherds to carry water tied to their donkeys as they crossed the countryside in the Pays Basque and the Occitanie. My vendor, Andre, artfully swung it over his shoulder and laughed as he pretended to drink from the mouth of the piece, showing me how it has been done for centuries.
